Image Licensing

We typically offer our clients extremely liberal licensing: unlimited marketing and editorial usage and permission to make personal prints. This allows our clients to do everything they need to do.
There are only a few limitations:
- Resell, relicensing, or license transfer is not permitted
- Use on mass-produced commercial products is not permitted without additional licensing
We retain the copyright to the images we capture; this allows us to offer our clients a wider range of services while insuring they are getting the best value for their investment. These services include, but are not limited to, metadata development, enhanced post-production, file captioning, print making, online gallery building and servicing, archive maintenance, digital asset management, and library services. Without our copyright ownership, we would not be able to provide any additional services beyond capturing images without specifically contracting for those services. We do not have works-for-hire agreements with any entities, public or private at this time.
Please note: licenses are not in force until invoices are paid in full.
There are three types of licensing available: personal use, commercial use, or editorial use.
Personal use licensing covers email distribution and social media publication. It includes LinkedIn. It may include posting on a business website for a business you own and it may include using on a business card for a business you own. It may include permission to make prints (however, the print quality is not guaranteed unless you license a print-ready file). It cannot be used on a business website or on any business collateral; those usages require a different license.
Commercial use licenses typically cover marketing collateral and other usages promoting a non-personal entity, regardless of size, ownership, structure, or tax status. Neither licensed images or licenses may be transferred or sold. Also, use on a mass-produced commercial product (such as a coffee mug or calendar) will require specific licensing. There may be other situations that require specific licensing. Please refer to the specific language included in your delivery and contact us if you have any questions or needs not addressed elsewhere.
Editorial use licenses are typically one-time use licenses that allow for simultaneous web and print publication of the same article. Please be mindful that a single use means just that: single use. Subsequent publication and usage will be billed at the time of publication. Some clients may receive editorial licensing that allows them unlimited editorial use for publishing content they generate. This does NOT include providing images to 3rd party publishers that would normally have to arrange their own photography. Please note: all editorial usage requires licensing. We may waive the licensing fee, but do not assume that to be the case. At a minimum, we charge a $50 library fee to pull any image from our catalog and make it available for publication.
